Canning conveyors for RMC Aggregates

Canning Conveyor have recently designed, manufactured, supplied, installed and commissioned a new feed hopper, field conveyor and stockpile conveyor, complete with electrics, at RMC Aggregates’ Fawley Quarry, near Southampton.

Fed by wheel loader, the 15-tonne dump hopper/belt feeder is designed to deliver up to 200 tonnes/h of sand and gravel on to a spur conveyor. The unit is fabricated from 6mm thick mild steel plate and stiffened with RSA sections and mild steel flats, the sloping sides of which are fitted with 10mm thick low-friction white perplas. The hopper outlet features: an 800mm wide flat-bed belt feeder, skirted along its full length with double-seal skirt rubbers; a screw-type metering gate for adjustment of material flow; an 11kW drive unit; and a fully guarded discharge chute fitted with a torsion-type multi-blade belt scraper. The entire unit is supported by a substantial skid-mounted structure fabricated from UC/UB sections, braced and stiffened by PFC/RSA sections.

Material is fed on to the heavy-duty tail-end loading section of a 600mm wide by 400m long field conveyor featuring: a heavy-duty tail-end return section; a heavy-duty, moveable intermediate loading section; and a 9m long hand-winch-type loop take-up unit.

This in turn feeds on to a 600mm wide by 300m centres troughed-belt stockpiling conveyor which initially travels overland as a ground conveyor, through an existing road tunnel and then back to ground level before rising at an angle of 16° for 40m to discharge on to a 10m high stockpile of 2,500 tonnes minimum capacity. This conveyor was supplied with a 750mm wide walkway on one side and around the head end, together with a 30kW drive, central pull wire system, side-supported three-roll troughing idlers, 102mm diameter parallel return rollers and substantial lattice-frame support trestles complete with a short access ladder to ground level.

Both conveyors are rated to carry up to 200 tonnes/h of –150mm sand and gravel with a bulk density of 1.6 tonnes/m3. In total, 1,475m of Cannoflex EP500/3 belting with 5mm and 1.5mm rubber covers were used for the project.
