Blind Jack
As readers may recall from a short article last spring, a working group was established in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, to erect a statue in celebration of John Metcalf (1717–1810), a pioneer road builder at the time of the Turnpike Trusts.
Barbara Asquith’s statue of John, who was perhaps better known as ‘Blind Jack’, was unveiled earlier this year and now sits in Knaresborough market place with a ‘viameter’ by his side. The working group would like to thank all individual IQ members who supported the project. Particular thanks go to the Yorkshire branch for their donation, and to colleagues at the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Asphalt Technology, who also supported the project.
