Belt scraper maintenance made easy

For many conveyor operators, the combination of dirt, dust, confined space and expensive equipment presents a constant challenge. Pressure to extend the working life of components means that engineers demand the best technology and innovation in an effort to keep their conveyor belts running.

Horizon Conveyor Equipment have recently unveiled their latest developments in belt-scraper technology. After consulting widely with operators in the UK and overseas, Horizon have developed the H primary scraper range, which adds to their already extensive range of belt cleaning equipment.

The new systems have been designed to eradicate widespread problems found in traditional primary belt scraper designs, where complex fitting and long-term maintenance issues have often challenged engineers.

According to Alan Bowler, managing director of Horizon Conveyor Equipment, for conveyor operators using primary and secondary belt scrapers as a cleaning system, the primary belt cleaner is an important part of that combination.

He also said that it can be difficult to mount a standard primary or tangential scraper, due to restrictions caused by the motor, gearbox or steelwork, or because the chute has limited space.

‘The H primary scraper range overcomes these problems,’ said Mr Bowler. ‘The conveyor system hangs over the top of the belt frame and is externally chute mounted. This allows the scraper to be easily fitted to most conveyor chute heads.’

Primary scrapers are generally not recommended for use with mechanical clip joints but the robustly designed H primary range is suitable for conveyor belts jointed with or without clip joints.

The belt cleaning system also overcomes maintenance issues. Conventional scrapers are often located in confined locations making maintenance difficult and, sometimes, impossible to carry out. As conveyor belts undergo constant wear in harsh conditions, caused by the close proximity of heavy machinery, scrapers can, therefore, quickly become ineffective.

The H primary range’s scraper adjustment mechanism is kept well away from flying debris and within easy reach for routine maintenance. ‘It is vital that belt scrapers are straightforward to fit and adjust,’ explained Mr Bowler. ‘Likewise, scrapers need to be accessible for regular maintenance and the H primary scraper range is an evolution in belt scraper design because it solves both of these problems.’

The system comes with blades largely made from polyurethane, although other blade types can be fitted to accommodate both mechanical clip joints and vulcanized belts. The H range is suitable for use in a wide range of industries, including aggregates and cement. Tailored scrapers for smaller applications can be custom built by Horizon.
