Aggregate Industries celebrate BRE Global ‘Excellent’ award

HAVING recently been assessed by BRE Global against BES 6001: Issue 2 Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products, Bardon Concrete’s ready-mixed concrete plant at Perry Barr, Birmingham, has been awarded a BRE Global ‘Excellent’ rating.

Carol Atkinson, chief executive of BRE Global, presented Miles Watkins, director of sustainable construction at Aggregate Industries, with the company’s ‘Excellent’ certificate at the EcoBuild exhibition earlier this month.

Just 12 months ago Aggregate Industries became the first company to be approved to BES 6001 by achieving responsible sourcing certification for operations at one of their quarry sites in the Midlands. The business subsequently achieved the standard company-wide in August 2009 with a ‘Good’ rating given across all products and sites.

Introduced by BRE Global in 2008, the BES 6001 framework standard is an independent certification scheme which assesses responsible sourcing policies and practices throughout the supply chain of construction products. With one assessment covering raw material, its manufacture and delivery, and its use, re-use and recyclability, the universal rating system allows architects, specifiers and other construction professionals to meet sustainability targets more easily.

Aggregate Industries’ group chief executive, Bill Bolsover, commented: ‘Just 12 months ago I announced the first BES 6001 certification at EcoBuild and since then we have continued to drive the business and the sector forward. Responsible sourcing is believed in and supported company-wide, allowing Aggregate Industries’ customers to source with great confidence. We will now be working towards BES 6001 ‘Excellent’ across all of our operations.’

Carol Atkinson of BRE Global, added: ‘We are extremely pleased that Aggregate Industries are continuing to strive for excellence in responsible sourcing. We hope by achieving this improved standard it will set a precedent for other companies to continue to raise the bar.’
