Surfacing Operations Director

Our client is a major provider of engineering services principally related to civil engineering and surfacing. The Company benefits from numerous long-term partnerships with Local Authorities across the UK, including contracts for the provision of highways maintenance and repairs.

An exciting, newly created opportunity as Surfacing Operations Director has arisen. Working closely with their civils business, you will take a leading position in support of growth opportunities, reporting to the Surfacing Director. You will take ownership for the day-to-day surfacing operations, overseeing a team of c. 50 people who are delivering complex operational programmes under tight time constraints.


  • Promote the highest level of awareness and compliance in all aspects of Health and Safety.
  • Oversee daily activity of the team’s surfacing activities for clients, as principal contractor or as sub-contractors to various public sector and private clients ensuring contracts are completed in line with client expectations.
  • Prepare weekly programmes, contract cost plans and other organisational reports as required.
  • Provide advice and guidance to your team including contracts managers, site managers, supervisors, operatives and sub-contractors.
  • Manage team workloads to meet goals and deadlines.
  • Ensure customer requirements are met in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain key supplier relationships and co-ordinate with in-house supply chain, sub-contractors and customers.
  • Identify and implement improvements to existing systems and policies.
  • Drive performance to achieve business objectives and KPIs.
  • Issue monthly reports to include data and statistical analyses of business unit performance.

The Candidate

We are seeking those with established expertise or talented candidates who can grow with the role. Experience of surfacing, specifically the complexities and inherent safety risks involved in this type of project delivery will be highly valued.

Your background could be from a competitor, other highways contractor, service and planning provider or relevant public body. You will have:

  • Demonstrable construction operational management experience.
  • Highly experienced within the highway sector.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Commercially and contractually astute with NEC contract experience.
  • The ability to influence and engage key internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong technical knowledge across management systems and business assurance.
  • An eye for detail and the ability to influence and effectively drive change.

Additional Details

  • An excellent base salary, car allowance, bonus and benefits are on offer.
  • This position will be Head Office based in the East Midlands and you will be part of the company senior management team.
