New HSE guidance on silica hazards

THE Health and Safety Executive has published a new hazard-assessment document for respirable crystalline silica focusing on its potential to cause the lung disease silicosis.

"Workers in a number of industry sectors, including mining and quarrying, can be exposed to dusts containing respirable crystalline silica, however the risk of developing silicosis varies according to the industrial processes involved and the composition of the dusts."

The new document contains a one-page ‘potency matrix’ which proposes how various factors might influence the ability of crystalline silica to cause silicosis. The current state of scientific knowledge concerning the quantitative risks of developing the disease is also included.

"The HSE estimates that approximately 100,000 workers are currently exposed to crystalline silica and this document forms a basis for practical guidance in targeting attention on those industries and processes most at risk."

"There are plans to issue further guidance on respirable crystalline silica later this year, which will cover issues related to lung cancer."

"Aimed at specialists in occupational health and hygiene, copies of ‘Respirable Crystalline Silica Phase 1’ (EH75/4), ISBN 0-7176-2374-2, are priced £7.50"
