Orkney Islands Council are looking for a dynamic, practical and experienced individual to take up the role of Team Manager (Quarries) in the Neighbourhood Services and Infrastructure Directorate.

The successful candidate will take on the management of the Council owned and operated Cursiter Quarry, serving the local market, including Council services. This hard rock quarry currently extracts around 75,000 – 100,000 tonnes of material every year, at around 10 – 15 blasts per year, and produces aggregate, asphalt and ac mixes. In addition, there is a salt storage facility providing salt for the Council winter maintenance service. The modern tar plant was installed in 2018 and is capable of producing 130 tonnes per hour. Planning permission was recently received for the next 30 years, and we are currently progressing the first stage of the planned expansion. The quarry operates with mobile crushing and screening plant and has a total workforce of 8, including the manager.A SVQ training programme is in place for all staff covering all plant and machinery.

This is an exciting opportunity to provide leadership and practical operational management as the quarry moves into the next phase of its development, working with the team, other Council services and local contractors to ensure that the local markets are appropriately supplied. In addition, you will be required to effectively manage the planned expansion, ensuring that works are carried out in accordance with environmental and other planning related conditions and that the planned timescales are met, allowing an uninterrupted supply of materials to the market.

You will have a recognised quarry management qualification and be able to demonstrate a strong operational quarry management background, ideally within a hard rock quarry. Experience of blasting and of filling the Explosives Supervisor role are essential. You will be able to demonstrate inspirational leadership and the ability to develop a team with an emphasis on continuing improvement.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
